IF Fuglafjordur V Linfield, Europa League 1st Round 1st LegLinfield scorers : Waterworth 68, Lowry 74
Linfield take a two goal lead back to Belfast after an impressive performance in the Faroe Islands this evening against IF Fuglafjordur. Second half goals from Andy Waterworth and substitute Philip Lowry secured the win for the Blues in what was only their second ever away win in Europe.
Manager David Jeffrey started with an attacking 4-4-2 formation with Matthew Tipton joining new signing Waterworth in attack. Jonny Tuffey, Matthew Clarke and James Knowles also made their competitive debuts for the club.
IF enjoyed most of the early possession and J.Ellingsgaard had an effort blocked by the Linfield defence after 11 minutes. Linfield looked to have good claims for a penalty on 22 minutes when Andy Waterworth was bundled over in the box but the Latvian referee waved play on. The Blues first opportunity fell to Matthew Tipton on 28 minutes but his effort from a James Knowles corner failed to hit the target. A minute later Madsen went close for the home side after BJ Burns conceded a free kick but his shot went narrowly wide. Madsen also had an opportunity for IF on 37 minutes but he shot just wide from a great position.
The home side continued to press for an opening and Saric had an effort blocked on 42 minutes. Matthew Tipton had a close range header on target for Linfield just before the break but IF goalkeeper Hansen saved well.
Half Time: IF Fuglafjordur 0 - 0 Linfield
Linfield started the second half brightly and Andy Waterworth almost gave them the lead on 54 minutes. He turned in the box and got his shot on target but Hansen made an excellent save. On 58 minutes Madsen had an opportunity for IF but Jonny Tuffey saved well. Matthew Tipton went close again for Linfield on the hour mark but he was denied by Hansen for a second time.
Manager David Jeffrey made some changes on the hour mark with Jamie Mulgrew replacing Brian McCaul and, a few minutes later, striker Peter Thompson replacing Matthew Tipton. Substitute Mulgrew was quickly in the thick of the action and he had a shot well saved by impressive goalkeeper Hansen on 66 minutes with Michael Carvill having a follow up effort blocked.
Linfield's second half pressure paid dividends on 68 minutes with a precious away goal scored by European debutant Andy Waterworth. He got in front of his marker and flicked the ball into the net from close range. It was 2-0 a few minutes later after substitute Philip Lowry turned brilliantly in the box and fired past Hansen. James Knowles almost added a third on 80 minutes. Michael Carvill was fouled on the edge of the box and Knowles sent in a great free kick which Hansen did well to push over the bar. IF almost pulled a goal back in injury time but Dalbud's shot was blocked by the Linfield defence.
A very impressive second half performance from Linfield and they will take great confidence into the second leg in Belfast in a weeks time.
